Rewind Hollow
Eight handmade toys gathered on a rug in a candlelit attic at night, beneath a round window showing a crescent moon: a speaker toy, a rag doll with a candle, a sock monkey in a beanie, a dandelion-haired doll, a cassette toy, a television toy with rabbit ears, a mossy green creature and a pink bunny on roller skates.

The attic · at rewind hour

Somebody sewed every one of them.

Every one of them has a spiral somewhere: an eye, a wheel, the grain of a belly. Whoever made them put it there to keep hold of something that had already gone.

So far, eight of them

Who’s up there

That’s eight of them, and the attic keeps more than it shows.

Hover a card to watch them. On a phone, tap. Then tell us which one is yours.

Reely, a cassette-tape toy with two pink spiral reel eyes and a pink bow, winding her tape with a pencil beside a boombox in the attic. watch

REELY

She made somebody a tape once, timed off the radio with her finger over the button. She still knows every song on it, in order. She never handed it over.

Neon Ricochet, a pink bunny toy with a button eye, a purple scrunchie, a glowing necklace and a friendship bracelet, sitting on the attic floor. watch

NEON RICOCHET

There is nothing on her skates to stop with. So she learned to fall instead, and to be quick about it. Up again before anyone can ask.

Hollow Belle, a rag doll with rope ringlet pigtails, one button eye and one spiral-stitched eye, holding a lit candle below a round attic window with a crescent moon. watch

HOLLOW BELLE

Keeps a candle lit all night for the same reason somebody left the hall light on for you. She would not say so.

Boombeau, a boxy charcoal speaker toy with antennae and round speaker ears, a coral heart glowing in the spiral cone of his chest, raising a hand. watch

BOOMBEAU

He puts the radio on every night, low, and lets it play. He does not dance to it. He just thinks the attic is better with something in it.

Tanglewood, a mossy green creature with twig antlers, one button eye, one spiral eye and a wood-grain spiral belly, holding a small glowing light in the grass. watch

TANGLEWOOD

Comes back when the streetlight comes on. That is the whole clock. Nobody knows where he is. Nobody worries.

Dandelion Mend, a rag doll with dandelion-fluff hair shedding seeds, one gold spiral button eye, in pink patchwork overalls at a table of buttons and thread. watch

DANDELION MEND

She keeps one button off a coat that doesn’t exist any more. Her jar says Buttons Fix Wishes. The jar is still full.

Static, a fuzzy purple-grey television-shaped toy with tall rabbit ears, his screen showing a squinting smile, a juice carton tucked in his pocket. watch

STATIC

Six in the morning, volume on two, until the screen goes to that long flat tone. Nobody makes him get up.

Pixel Vex, a cream sock-monkey toy in an orange knitted beanie and dark glasses over mismatched button eyes, waving in front of lit arcade cabinets. watch

PIXEL VEX

Held the top score all summer. The machine went in September before anyone wrote the number down. He never found out if it would have stood.

The first story

Both Knees

Neon Ricochet never learned to stop, so she learned to fall. A picture book about the part nobody photographs: the getting up, and how it still counts when nobody claps.

Cover of Both Knees: a pink stitched rabbit sits on an attic floor lacing a purple roller skate, a jar of buttons and a stack of boomboxes beside her.
the cover
Page from Both Knees: a close view of striped legs and worn purple roller skates. The text reads, Neon Ricochet never learned to stop. Look at her skates. Nothing there to stop with.

  • Large 8.5 × 8.5 inch pages, glossy cover
  • The moral is on the back cover and nowhere in the story

The second story

One Whole Turn

Neon is the best skater in the attic, right up until she tries a circle. A picture book about being a beginner in front of people who have only ever watched you be good at it.

Cover of One Whole Turn: a pink stitched rabbit on roller skates spins on one foot in a warm attic, arms lifted, a glowing collar at her neck, milk crates and a boombox behind her.

page 6

The third story

How to Stop

Tanglewood rolls down a hill and will not get up, and every kind of help Neon has is the fast kind. A picture book about how staying still for somebody is the hardest thing she can give.

Cover of How to Stop: a pink stitched rabbit and a small round moss creature lie side by side in the grass on a hillside, looking up at a cloud shaped like a roller skate.

What else is coming

Music · fourteen tracks

Side A

The attic’s own soundtrack. A music box, a synth-pop theme, a boom-bap cue, a rink parade, and ten more. Every note of it built from scratch, so it is ours to give away.

Ready. Put something on, bottom right.

Whoever turns up next

The empty shelf

The cast is not closed. That is eight of them, and the attic keeps more than it shows — the shelf with nothing on it is there for a reason.

No date, on purpose.
